LET'S
TALK ABOUT
FROM
REMINGTON
ARMS
The Ruger centerfires have been plagued by a bad reputation for some time. After I got into shooting the VT model, I did some investigation into why every competitive shooter I talked to thought that the Ruger M77 Mark II was a piece of junk. I thought this was quite peculiar since I had been exposed to the VT models and had seen them to be incredibly good quality and reasonably priced. I had an opportunity to speak to one of the Ruger sales reps about their questionable reputation. His explanation was that Ruger's main problem was that they used to buy their barrels from various sources, usually based on cost. There was no telling where the barrel come from in the earlier Mark II's. This could explain why some were good and some were bad. RUGER NOW MANUFACTURES (FORGES) THEIR OWN BARRELS, WITH THE SAME EQUIPMENT AS EVERYONE ELSE IN THE INDUSTRY.
I have
found the
new
barrels to
be
excellent.
With
proper
care I
don't see
why a
Ruger
manufactured
barrel
couldn't
perform
with any
factory
barrel in
the
industry. The 22-250 allows tremendous velocities with the 55 gr. varieties, which has been the key to my long-range kills on g-hogs (g-hogs are tough little bastards). My Ruger does well with several good highly explosive bullets on the market. Noslers are very good, V-max is good.
"watch for more on this in the RELOADING SECTION" The V-max 40's are very good in my .223. I am currently pushing these little babies 3750 fps into 1/2 moa. I am currently working mostly with the Nosler BT. They are plentiful and very consistent. They do not produce the blood and guts kills like the Blitzking, just solid instantaneous death. Less mess.... Man those BK's are really kinda' gross. I can't wait to try them in 40 gr. on P-dogs next June....
I wrote this on a BBS in response to the constant Ruger bashing that I had been seeing… Savages are better than Ruger my ass!!!What is this some kind of conspiracy!!! I have owned Savages and they are good shooters….BUT..I currently own (3) Ruger VT’s and load for my partner’s 22-250 which is identical to mine. There is not one rifle on the market that has the features of the Ruger for the money. This not shooting rumor is nonsense! Obviously this was started by someone at Savage…here are some excerpts from earlier conversations. --Nosler 55 BT showed a velocity of 3850 fps, the Sierra 52 Match showed 3950 fps. The seating depth that shot the best, for both guns, was right at .025" from the lands. Accuracy to date is as follows: my gun (with the Noslers) shot .75" at 200 yds –that’s 200 yards. Our 22-250’s are BOX STOCK! These rifles come from the factory with the following features: What is this some kind of conspiracy!!! All for less than 5 bills! Nothing comes close! I haven’t even talked about my .223. This thing shoots so good it will make you cry! If you don’t believe me, go read this…
This is a picture of my Ruger M77/22 VBZ. This little puppy will shoot .25" groups @ 50 yards with CCI Standard Velocity (sorry I haven't saved any targets for pictures). It shoots about the same with Eley High Velocity HP(which performs well @100 yards). This is the first rifle I have ever owned, that I have, literately, fired 3 shots into the same hole without cutting the edge! Believe it or not... I have never done this beyond 3 shots, but I have done this more than once. In fact, I didn't realize what was happening at first, and thought I missed the target! The third shot on the first attempt just barely oversized the hole, so I knew what was going on. I have filled sheets of targets with 50 yard- five shot groups that never went above 1/2". A reasonably good and cheap ammunition choice is the CCI Standard Velocity. I tried the Green Box Match CCI and saw no real difference. This could be because the Ruger does not have a match chamber. I plan on trying the Fed Match stuff, based on some tests I saw in Precision Shooting magazine. The VBZ is stock, except that I floated the barrel. Consistency doubled. No kidding...doubled. Group size went to HALF! I wonder why Ruger does not do this from the factory. Well...one reason might be because of the barrel mounting system, I found out this can be a real pain in the butt!!! The point-of-impact can change drastically after the tip pressure is removed. This is the same system that the Ruger 10/22 uses. It is a interference fit mount that tightens with two Allen screws on the bottom of the barrel at the front of the action. I would lose this whole system and thread the barrel. This rifle could really set some people on-ear, with a few factory tweaks. The scope is a BSA 6 x 24 x 44 (target dot), which is perfect for a .22 rimfire or centerfire. ***Midway had this scope for $140.00 in the November-1998 catalog****
