Everything
you ever wanted to know about Prairie Dog Hunting, but were afraid to
ask. Walt is my good buddy, and has lived in South
Dakota more than 50 years.
I bet he knows as much about those
little varmints as anyone. Feel free to send in questions or
comments.

Did you know?
That p-dogs harvest grass the same as farmers
harvest their hay crops?
Yep - they do!
Prairie dogs cut the grass around their burrows, let it lay (called the curing
process) for a couple of days - put the cut grass into small bunches, (all
laying the same direction) for a few days - then haul the grass bundles down
into their holes. Now they have feed for a long winter.
That prairie dogs can recognize a person's pickup or
car?
Sure they can!
Frequent p-dog hunters have said that after several trips over weeks to a
certain town, the dogs disappear at the sound or sight of that vehicle. But,
after changing outfits, the dogs stayed out and were good targets.
That prairie dogs relate to temperatures?
You bet they do!
When the heat of the day makes you hot, sticky and generally uncomfortable, the
p-dogs agree. You might as well shed-up, put your feet up and sip a cool one,
because that's what they are doing. No Kidding - they hole up until the day
starts cooling down - about 5 pm - then they come out again and do their thing.
So, take a break, swap good hunting store, re-load, or whatever - and prepare
to go out again later. It's a nice time for a break anyways.
Did you know?
That prairie dogs take care of their fallen
comrades?
Isn't that S-P-E-C-I-A-L ?
Kind of grabs at the heart strings doesn't it! Maybe that's why you can't find
the bodies after you make that great shot at 800 yds. If the dogs are close
enough to the hole anda not in 3 million small indescribable pieces, the other
dogs will get them back into the burrows.
Makes a guy wonder if he really did make an unbelievable great show or just a
"want-a-be" great story show to tell around the table after too many
beers!
Also makes a guy wonder what kind of funeral service they have down in those
burrows. Bet it's a quick one!
Did you Know?
What all those antics of the prairie dogs about?
Like jumping up and down with paws raised in the air? Some hunters believe it's
their way of communicating with fellow p-dogs about like, kids and those pesky,
noisy bullets flying above their heads.
Actually, they are just thumbing their noses at your hunting skills.
Like - Nay, Nay, Nay - can't hit us!
